LET'S READ - LITERACY WEEK

LaBelle 2015 (15) readingFrom January 28th to February 1st We are celebrating Literacy Week! Did you know that reading begins at birth as your baby listens to you reading to them?  They hear sounds that will eventually become their first words.  By their first birthday, they will learn all the sounds needed to speak in their native language.  The more books you read to your baby, the more words he/she hears.  This will help him/her use more words when he/she is able to talk.  The most important reason to read to your child is the connection they make between the things they love (you, your voice and the closeness he/she feels when you read to them) and books.  They begin to associate books and happiness.  As your child gets older, ask him/her questions about the story and talk with them about the pictures in the book.  This helps them learn about the parts of a story and the characters in a story.

WHAT ARE SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

There are plenty of good reasons to send your child to preschool. Not only does preschool prepare children for kindergarten, but it’s also an opportunity to help promote social and emotional development. The preschool classroom environment is structured to help children make new friends, learn how to play and build relationships with others. One way preschool teachers do this is by organizing small group activities.

Small group activities are fun and engaging learning activities that feature a small number of children, as opposed to an activity that features the whole class or free play. By separating the children into small groups featuring interesting materials, teachers are able to encourage social interaction and create an inclusive environment.
