FAMILY WORKSHOPS - TIME TO PLAY

family nutrition program

January 17th, from 5:00pm-6:00pm

Join us for our January Healthy Home Styles Parent Workshop in our initiative to bring healthy foods and lifestyles to parents. The topic this month is “Time to Play.”  Family togetherness is an important part of developing deep, positive relationships with each other. Participating in everyday simple activities together is an easy way to start spending more time with each other. Remember that any amount of time counts, be it one whole day during the week or 30 minutes every day.  Join us as we learn simple ways to play together.  Below are a few fun suggestions.

PLAY TOGETHER

  • Play board games, cards, and sports. Emphasize playing “for fun” and respond to mistakes or losing with “it’s just a game” — spending time together is what’s important.
  • Participate in child-led imaginative and role playing games. Act out stories in person or with toys.
  • Have regular activities such as going on a picnic, baking, or going to a ball game. Combine or alternate family members’ favorite activities.
  • Explore nature. Walk along beaches or rivers and collect shells or stones. Hike in local parks. Go on a backyard scavenger hunt.

HEALTHY HABITS FOR LIFE

Lets Move Calendar.jpgThe "Get Moving Today Activity Calendar" developed by Head Start Body Start provides fun ways to help preschoolers be active. Check out the January Calendar. There is an activity you can do at home with your child every day of the month!

WHAT ARE SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

There are plenty of good reasons to send your child to preschool. Not only does preschool prepare children for kindergarten, but it’s also an opportunity to help promote social and emotional development. The preschool classroom environment is structured to help children make new friends, learn how to play and build relationships with others. One way preschool teachers do this is by organizing small group activities.

Small group activities are fun and engaging learning activities that feature a small number of children, as opposed to an activity that features the whole class or free play. By separating the children into small groups featuring interesting materials, teachers are able to encourage social interaction and create an inclusive environment.

Other benefits of small group activities include:

Helps developmental growth
Teaches cooperation
Encourages interaction
Builds observational skills
