LET'S READ - LITERACY WEEK

beautiful oopsthe mixed-up chameleon

Monday, January 28th We are celebrating Literacy Week! Our Infants, Toddler 1 & Two’s will be reading Beautiful Oops and our Preschool & VPK classrooms will read The Mixed-up Chameleon. Classrooms will do expansion activities to accompany the book.

DID YOU KNOW??

FSW 2016 (23)Reading begins at birth as your baby listens to you reading to them.  They hear sounds that will eventually become their first words.  By their first birthday, they will learn all the sounds needed to speak in their native language.  The more books you read to your baby, the more words he/she hears.  This will help him/her use more words when he/she is able to talk.  The most important reason to read to your child is the connection they make between the things they love (you, your voice and the closeness he/she feels when you read to them) and books.  They begin to associate books and happiness.  As your child gets older, ask him/her questions about the story and talk with them about the pictures in the book.  This helps them learn about the parts of a story and the characters in a story.

NUTRITION CORNER

Easy Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Ingredients

1 (16 ounce) bag of pretzel rods
16 ounces chopped milk, semisweet, dark or white chocolate or candy melts
Sprinkles, mini M&M's, coconut, toffee bits, chopped nuts, etc.

Directions:

Melt the chocolate by filling clean, tall heat safe jars with chopped chocolate or candy melts.  Set them into the crock pot and carefully fill the crock pot with hot water until it's about halfway up the sides of the jars, being careful not to get any water into the jars with the chocolate at any time.

Set the crock pot temperature to high and let the chocolate sit for about 30 minutes without covering. Use a long handled spoon to stir the chocolate as it melts.

Once the chocolate is melted, turn the temperature on the crock pot down to low or warm.

Dip pretzel rods into the melted chocolate, shaking off any excess chocolate before transferring them to a parchment lined baking sheet.  Sprinkle with whatever toppings you desire before the chocolate has a chance to set, then let the chocolate fully harden before storing in an airtight container.
