The American Red Cross celebrates National Blood Donor Month and recognizes the lifesaving contribution of blood and platelet donors.  As we begin the New Year, the Red Cross encourages individuals to roll up a sleeve to give this month.

DID YOU KNOW??

Reading begins at birth as your baby listens to you reading to them.  They hear sounds that will eventually become their first words.  By their first birthday, they will learn all the sounds needed to speak in their native language.  The more books you read to your baby, the more words he/she hears.  This will help him/her use more words when he/she is able to talk. The most important reason to read to your child is the connection they make between the things they love (you, your voice and the closeness he/she feels when you read to them) and books.  They begin to associate books with happiness.  As your child gets older, ask him/her questions about the story and talk with them about the pictures in the book.  This helps them learn about the parts of a story and the characters in a story.

KINDERGARTEN IS TOO LATE!

CCC 2018 (3)Kindergarten is too late™ is a joint  venture lead by Child Care of Southwest Florida Inc. This project is designed to inform and educate individuals on the importance of high quality, child centered early education experiences that focus on the fundamentals of learning.

One of the prime discoveries in brain development: over 90% of the neurons used in the brain form and are stimulated (or not) for lifetime use between the ages of 2 and 5 years

This knowledge effectively reinforces the need that all children must explore learning early, and renders our current thoughts on education obsolete, leading us to realize that Kindergarten Is Too Late!

What can you do as a parent?

Read to your child daily- sing to your child - talk to your child - turn the TV off and play with your child- give your child choices and positive feedback –Listen to an audio book - provide problem solving activities-allow your child to be creative - have a family game night: play go fish!-give your child responsibilities!

NUTRITION CORNER

pretzel rod

Easy Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods

Ingredients

1 (16 ounce) bag of pretzel rods
16 ounces chopped milk, semisweet, dark or white chocolate or candy melts
Sprinkles, mini M&M's, coconut, toffee bits, chopped nuts, etc.

Directions:

Melt the chocolate by filling clean, tall heat safe jars with chopped chocolate or candy melts.  Set them into the crock pot and carefully fill the crock pot with hot water until it's about halfway up the sides of the jars, being careful not to get any water into the jars with the chocolate at any time.

Set the crock pot temperature to high and let the chocolate sit for about 30 minutes without covering. Use a long handled spoon to stir the chocolate as it melts.

Once the chocolate is melted, turn the temperature on the crock pot down to low or warm.

Dip pretzel rods into the melted chocolate, shaking off any excess chocolate before transferring them to a parchment lined baking sheet.  Sprinkle with whatever toppings you desire before the chocolate has a chance to set, then let the chocolate fully harden before storing in an airtight container.
