Stress Management for Parents

Parenting can be very stressful.  Whether you are a stay at home parent or a working parent, a single parent or a married parent, mother or father, parent of one child or several children: remaining cool, calm and full of energy can help get your through the day.  Below are some simple stress management tips and relaxation exercises that have proven useful to adults whether they are parents or not.

1. Deep breathing Stop and take a moment to breathe slow and deep. If you are breathing properly, you will feel the expansion in the abdominal area before your rib cage expands.
2. Take a Mental Vacation When we think about things that are upsetting, our body tenses up. To prepare for your mental vacation, relax your muscles and take a few deep breaths.  Then close your eyes and imagine you are someplace you enjoy.  It could be the beach or the mountains or enjoying a favorite activity.  Try to fully experience this imagined event.
3. Stress Balls These are great tools to have around you on a daily basis. They can be purchased almost anywhere and are great just to hold in your hands and SQUEEZE when you feel a stressful moment beginning to surface.
4. Essential Oils If you are familiar with essential oils, this can also be a way to take the stress away. The oils can be diffused or inhaled…….which ever you find most beneficial.

  • 6 small boxes of Jell-O in rainbow colors
  • 2 cups of sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Boiling water and cold water
  • Whipped cream
  • Colored sprinkles
  • Dozen 4 ounce jelly jars (we used the wide mouth ones)

1. Set out 12 half pint canning jars and lightly spray with cooking spray.
2. Dissolve the package of purple gelatin in 1 cup of boiling water.
3. Mix ½ cup of the dissolved gelatin with 1/3 cup of sour cream.
4. Place 1-2 spoonfuls of the sour cream mixture into the bottom of each of the jars.  You will have some leftover.
5. Once it is firm to the touch, mix the rest of the unused dissolved purple Jello-O with 3 T of cold water.
6. Place 1-2 spoonfuls of the purple on top of the first layer. Place back into the refrigerator until the top is firm.
7. Repeat the process with the remaining boxes of gelatin working your way from blue to red.
8. When the final layer has set, top the layered Jell-O with whipped cream and decorate with rainbow sprinkles.

Grab a spoon and enjoy!
