HOW CAN YOU BE MORE INVOLVED IN YOUR CHILD'S EARLY EDUCATION?

Volunteering.pngVolunteer as Class Parent: If you have more time to give, this is a great way to be a part of your child’s early education. Share your talents! Please let your child’s teacher know if you would like to volunteer in the classroom. We LOVE volunteers!

Be a Class Reader: Offer to come in to read to the whole class of children or to individual children who need more support.

Communicating: Give positive feedback and show appreciation for teachers and the principal. Model good manners in front of your children.

Collaborating with the Community: Be a role model; be active in community service yourself or together with your child. Make donations and offer to help someone in need.

PAJAMA PROGRAM

Parents, during the month of November we will be participating in the pajama drive to help provide pajamas for children living in shelters, group homes, foster care and other organizations that support at-risk youth. Our classrooms will be competing against each other to see which classroom can bring in the most pajamas. The class that wins will receive a pizza party!

Please have all donations into Megan or Jessica by Friday, December 8th. Thank you so much for participating in this great cause!!

Here are some simple guidelines for the pajamas:

  • Pajamas must be brand new. Pajamas in all sizes are needed.
  • Pajamas must be in complete sets or nightgowns.
  • Pajamas must be manufactures as pajamas to ensure they are flame-retardant and safe.

"LET'S FIND OUT!": THREE TIPS FOR RAISING CURIOUS KIDS

Curiosity is tied to academic achievement, with research showing “unequivocally that when people are curious about something, they learn more, and better.” According to one study, children whose parents encouraged them to ask questions were more likely to succeed in science. Curiosity also drives creativity, or as writer Elizabeth Gilbert notes, creativity is the natural byproduct of a “curiosity-driven life.”

Curious George.pngHere’s one simple trick to raising curious kids: pay attention to their questions.

A one-year-old child’s first question is usually: “What’s that?”—or as my kids pronounced it, “Dat?” They want help naming their world—what they see, hear, taste, smell and feel. From there, the questioning steadily evolves.

But if we want to nurture their curiosity, perhaps the best response we can give is simply this: “Good question. Let’s find out.”

Here’s how that might look:

1. Let’s Explore-let children try things independently –use open ended toys.

2. Let’s look it up-but ask your child first “what do you think?” then look up the answer in a book or online.

3. Let’s ask an expert-think about your friends and family who may know the answer because of their hobbies, experiences or skills.

GINGERBREAD PLAY DOUGH RECIPE

  • Gingerbread Play Dough.png1/4 cup Molasses
  • 3/4 cup Cornstarch (corn flour)
  • 4 tsp Baking Soda
  • 2 tsp Water
  • 2 Tbls Vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Allspice
  • 2 Tbls + 2 tsp Flour

Mix the cornstarch, baking soda, cinnamon, and allspice. Then add the water, oil, and molasses. Add 2 tablespoons of flour. Then keep adding flour 1/2 teaspoon at a time, mixing well after each addition, until your dough is no longer sticky.

HEALTHY HABITS FOR LIFE

Lets Move Calendar.jpgCheck out the November Calendar. There is an activity you can do at home with your child every day of the month!

DID YOU KNOW?

Our center partners with Florida Gulf Coast University and Rasmussen College every year. Our program helps prepare future Early Childhood Educators with meaningful experiences and opportunities to apply knowledge gained from their coursework. Interns are partnered with a mentor teacher to learn developmentally appropriate hands on practices to meet the needs of our children and families. We are grateful to have this opportunity to give back to future early childhood professionals and strengthen those who live in our community.
