Pete the cat 2018.jpgMessina has had a delightful month of literacy activities.  We had a great group of retired teachers who came to read to the children on Monday, March 12th.  They brought in many books to share.  On Wednesday the Lion’s 4 year old classroom hosted the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, with an engaging theater performance of “Pete the Cat and the Missing Cupcakes.”  Children performed for their family, friends and guests.  Check out our photographs on Facebook. We were delighted to have guests from the Early Learning Coalition.

The Lion Classroom is hosting a "Book Buddy Tea Party" on April 13th at 10:30AM.  The children so love their books and are super excited when one of the “Buddies” hand delivers the book to the classroom.  Thus, an invite to all of the Book Buddies to come and share tea and cookies with their buddy.  tea time.jpgChildren are already talking about, “their book buddy coming to read to them.”  We will have guests from the Early Learning Coalition, our Book Buddies and parents and friends joining us.  Mark your calendar!  This is a very fun event.  Watch your children display their “Tea Party” manners and see the joy on their faces when they meet their “Buddy".

1000 books.pngThe Lee County Library has invited us to participate in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten literacy initiative.  The library staff will bring us the materials to share with parents to provide an innovative, yet fun approach to establishing strong early literacy skills.  Parents and caregivers keep track of the books that they read to their children.  Parents and caregivers can use log sheets, journals, or even their iPhone and Android App to track their reading.  This program will help parents and caregivers give their young children the confidence necessary to become strong readers and successful in school and life.  Fliers will be sent home that explain the 1000 books before Kindergarten.

Judy Alvarado, library staff, will be presenting a whole group story time and/or reading with students in the library center where they can read together and check out a book.  The program begins on April 2nd and will be held every Monday at 10:30AM

Sanibel Sea School is partnering with Messina to bring the oceans to our center.  The school age and the VPK program children will participate in monthly activities in the classroom and school-agers will attend a monthly field trip to the Sanibel Causeway.  We are so privileged to have this opportunity brought to our center.  Char and Johnny, Sanibel Sea School Staff, facilitate the classroom activity and the field trip.  Children were excited to see the fish Johnny brought in to share with the VPK children.  On Tuesday the school-agers went on their first field trip to the Causeway.  What better way to learn about our oceans than to take the children on a day of discovery. Children got wet as they explored Sanibel's unique marine habitats.  Children learned to use the seine nets and scanned the nets for the possibility of finding a seahorse, small fish and other inhabitants of the Gulf.

The 4-H Mavericks will be joining the School Age children at 3:15, on both April 11 and April 28th.  The Mavericks are a huge hit with the school ages they love working with the older 4-H’ers and sharing an activity together.  This has been a very rewarding experience for both the club members and the children in our program.  Don’t forget to check Facebook to see all of the fun your children are having.
