Harlem Academy Child Care Center News

Last month the children in Room #2 did an activity involving insects.  The teachers had the children count the insects, and they had to sort them by flying and non-flying insects.  After the completion of that activity, the teachers had the children tell the colors of specific insects.

On Monday, January 29th, the children in Room #9 worked on an activity involving fruit names, and the feel and texture of them.

February 16th: The 3 and 4 year-olds are going on a field trip to the Brighton Reservation. We will get to know more about their culture and festivities. Please ask your teacher for more details.

The Heat Start classrooms, Room #9 welcomes a new teacher: Jayanti Pokhrel. "Mrs.J" (that’s how the children call her) moved here from Arizona. She has a Masters in Natural Resource Management.  She interned at Manzo Elementary (kindergarten) in Arizona, and she’s excited to be part of our team.

Lawonda Kelly is teaching in our toddler class Room #20B.  She has 25 years of experience in early childhood education.  She used to work for CCSWFL at Children’s Garden of LaBelle, and now she’s happy to be part of our team again.

Last but not least, Jameria Davis is our new floater teacher.  She will be helping around the center. She is very excited to be part of the Harlem Academy family.

Imalay Soto.jpgThis month, we want to recognize one of our many parent volunteers, Imalay Soto. She has been very helpful to room #2. She brings breakfast from the kitchen to the classroom, and serves and clean up every morning.

Thank you Imalay for been such a great helper, you are a rock star!

Reading To Kids Creates Habit

It’s never too soon to read to a child.  There’s no set timetable.  Each child learns to read at his or her own pace.  But forget the flashcards!  The most important factor in reading development is whether or not a child was read to regularly.

  • Make reading a priority.   Do it every day.Children_reading_tips_banner.jpg
  • Keep a variety of books around---pattern, board, plastic, pop-up and noise-making.
  • Never withhold stories as a form of punishment.
  • Encourage questions about words and pictures.
  • Take advantage of “environmental print” you see in daily travels.
  • Make sure your child has a comfortable spot to read.
  • Be a role model.

love potion smoothie.jpg

1/2 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1 small carton of yogurt
1/2 cup ice cubes
1 cup apple juice

Place strawberries, raspberries and juice in blender. Blend several seconds.  If you would like a thicker smoothie add more fruit or for a drinkable smoothie add 1/4 cup more juice.  This is one of those Valentine recipes that can be used year round.
