children brainThe most active time for the brain to make the necessary connections for language is during the first five years of life.  It is during this time that adults need to be most active in talking and reading with children.  The more children hear a variety of words, the more they will understand and learn, and the more they understand and learn, the more likely  they will become good readers.

When adults share books with young children, they are looking at the pictures and  listening to the words that are being read to them.  During this time, their brains are making connections between what they are hearing and seeing.  When the story is connected with something the child is familiar with, the more likely she is to remember it, and the more often the same story is read, the stronger that brain connection will be.

Thursday July 4th The center will be CLOSED in Observance of  Independence Day! Have a great day with your family and friends celebrating at the beach, on a picnic, or watching fireworks!  Remember to be safe!

Hurricanes & Bad Weather

Hurricane season begins June 1st, and we want to be prepared. During the summer months if a hurricane is approaching, you need to listen to your radios for closings.  Child Care of Southwest Florida follows the Lee County School Board Bad Weather Closing Schedule.  Please tune into your local weather station.  If school is called off or closes early the center will follow suit.  Please be prepared for alternative care in the event of bad weather closures.

3 or 4 whole regular or wheat pita breads
1 cup Greek yogurt
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp honey
Sliced mixed fruit (apple, kiwi, strawberry, oranges and grapes)

In a bowl mix the yogurt, honey, and vanilla extract.  Place a pita bread, spread yogurt on it and arrange the fruits.  This recipe uses apple, kiwi, strawberry, oranges and grapes, but blackberries, bananas, mango and peaches tastes equally great!
