An essential aspect of your child’s growth and development includes emotional health. As children grow, they develop an increased awareness of their feelings and the feelings of others. Support this growth and development by taking time to identify emotions in pictures, books and real life. While reading a book, label how a character feels and ask questions about this feeling. For example, "This child is clenching her fists. How is she feeling? What makes her feel this way?" Also, identify feelings in real life throughout the day. For example, "That was a big yawn! How do you feel?" Also identify your own feelings and appropriate responses to help your child grow. You could say, "I feel tired today. Taking a quick walk will give me more energy!" Showing children the range of healthy emotions in everyday life helps support their healthy emotional growth and shows positive ways to manage emotions. As educators we appreciate your hard work at home that supports your child's success at school!
