Our Family Nutrition Parent Workshops are our initiative to bring healthy foods and lifestyles to parents.  These one hour workshops include cooking demonstrations, how to shop sensibly, and how to prepare meals on a budget.  Parents who attend, will receive valuable information and still get home in time for dinner.  We encourage all of our parents to attend to help us help you become a healthy and active family.  There will be many door prizes for those who attend.

family nutrition program

YUM engages children in fun activities that are encouraged through exploration, questioning and decision making applied to eating healthy foods.  Through the YUM curriculum, children learn by doing.  Children are taught about healthy foods, as well as participating in both a hands-on and physical learning activity.  The greatest strength of the YUM program was the repeated exposure children were given to the nutrition components found on MyPlate.  Both teachers and children will participate in hands-on engagement and have an opportunity to try all the foods presented to them.  Schedule below:

open house

Friday, September28th

Join us on Friday, September 28th for our annual Open House.  Visit your child’s classroom between 9:00 AM and 11:00AM.  Parents will have an opportunity to visit the classroom see their children’s work and learn about our curriculum and the importance of family involvement.  Classrooms will be providing a snack and will have a surprise for the parents who attend.  Please join your child and teacher on this important day!

Through play children learn cognitive skills that include problem solving, remembering, decision making, processing information and learning language.  During play, children develop foundational understanding in math, science, social studies and physical and emotional concepts.  Below are different types of play that are important to understand how your child learns best.

Solitary play: A child plays alone (one child takes care of a doll by himself).

Parallel play: Children play side by side during an activity without interacting (two children stand next to each other at the water table but don’t talk or use materials together).

Cooperative play: Children plan, discuss and implement their play together (two or more children build a highway out of blocks).

Symbolic play: Children use one object to represent another object during play (a child holds a block up to her ear as a phone and starts talking).

Sociodramatic play: Children take on roles (a child crawls on the ground and barks, pretending to be the family dog).

Here are some snack suggestions for September:

  • Scrambled eggs and sliced bell pepper wrapped in a whole-wheat tortilla.
  • Whole-grain bagel topped with peanut butter and banana slices.
  • Egg-in-a-Hole (whole-grain toast with an egg cooked in the center).egg-in-a-hole-1024x768
  • Oatmeal with strawberries.
